December 8th, 2009 Photo Blog 012 – The Sumatran Tiger, 1000 and counting

My trip to the zoo yesterday led me to take this shot of another critically endangered species, the Sumatran Tiger.

The Sumatran Tiger is the smallest of all Tiger subspecies, making it easier for them to move through dense rain forrests. It is also a fast swimmer due to the webbing between its toes which when spread can give it that extra advantage. It is even known to chase prey into the water before moving in for the kill.

The typical meal for a Sumatran Tiger consists of larger prey such as deer and wild boar, but also smaller animals like fowl, monkeys and fish.

October 30th, 2009 Photo Blog 010 – The Hunter Valley

Hello Internet!

I recently spent a couple of days at the Hunter Valley, New South Wales’ famous wine region. It’s a short and scenic 2-3 hour drive north of Sydney and is well worth a visit whether you like your wines or not. Here is a small selection of photo’s I made over my visit. There is no real theme to this set, rather it is more just a cross section of all the shots I took that weekend.

September 23rd, 2009 Photo Blog 008 – Cremorne Point

Heres a new set of images that I took from Cremorne Point, just a 10 minute ferry ride across the river from Circular Quay. The weather had been tempremental all day but the rain held off for long enough periods to let me get some nice shots of the brooding clouds over the city skyline.

I was using a 2 stop gradient filter for these images. I quite liked the effect it had on the clouds even though I wouldnt have necessarily thought of using it on an overcast scene until I tried it.

Well, theres not much more to say really – I’ll let the images speak for themselves… Enjoy :)

September 22nd, 2009 Photo Blog 007 – Mrs Macquarie’s Point (take two)

Here’s another handful of shots of the Opera House that I took from another trip to Macquarie Point a week or two ago. I have been in Sydney for less than a year so I am still in awe at how every sunset seems to give you something different to shoot. The colours on this night were just beautiful and this first image has had little post processing done on it and is a pretty accurate reflection of the scene infront of me as I pressed the shutter.

The photo of Sonia really stretched the capabilities of my popup flash. It was pretty dark by the time I took it and I used rear curtain flash to light up the foreground whilst creating a longish exposure of the background. I was happy with the effect although I would love to see what I can achieve when I invest in a proper flash unit.

September 21st, 2009 Photo Blog 006 – La Perouse photowalk

La Perouse is quickly becoming one of my favourite local places to shoot.  A couple of weekends ago Sonia and I headed off on a walk from Yarra Bay, along Frenchmans Bay and onto La Perouse and Bare Island. It took about 1 1/2 hours at a leisurely pace and we got some nice images along the way. Here is a small selection of my shots as we followed the route south.

It makes a change for me to post some landscapes that were taken in the daytime, I always seem to find myself taking long exposures at night but I really should get out more in the daylight hours as I had a really nice time on this photowalk.

In case you are reading this and would like to follow the walk yourself, please see this google map for the location:

We travelled by public transport mainly because we are currently car-less but it is actually quite convenient for begining the walk in one place and ending it in another. The 309 bus (which goes from Circular Quay) will drop you at the bottom of Military Road, just a short walk from the northern tip of Yarra Bay beach. Then once you have completed the walk south to La Perouse you can catch the 394 back to Maroubra Junction from which you can  head off anywhere you like.

Thanks for visiting and see you next time :)
